TRAUMA SERVICE CENTERS
Trauma Centers provide care for patients who have suffered serious traumatic injuries such as falls, motor vehicle collisions, or gunshot wounds. Trauma centers may also refer to emergency departments (also known as "casualty departments" or "accident and emergency") in the absence of specialized services for treating victims of severe trauma.
Top-level trauma centers have access to specialist medical and nursing care, including emergency medicine, trauma surgery, critical care, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, anesthesiology, and radiology, as well as a variety of highly specialized and advanced surgical and diagnostic equipment. Lower-level trauma centers may only be able to provide initial care and stabilization of traumatic injuries and arrange transfer of patients to higher-level trauma care.
